Memento Mori- Victorian Postmodern Photography

Memento Mori is a term in Latin and it means 'Remember you will die' and it is also known as Postmodern Photography. During the early 1800s, photography just started and Victorian took photographs of bereaved and the reason they did that is to remember their dead. The dead were posed and made to look like they were still alive when they took the Memento Mori photos. Victorian also used props in the photograph such as for children, they used their favourite toys. As you can see some of the photos, the dead's eyes  were opened because sometimes, their eyes would be fixed open or drawn onto the prints afterwards. At first, it was just affordable for wealthy or elite, but later on, photography become less expensive and towards late 1800s, middle class people could also afford it as well.

On the photos above, you can see there is a stand behind the man and it is used to support the body when taking the photographs. A stand or braces were used at that time to support and position the body.
I found these photographs not scary for me but very sweet and touching as it has deep meanings inside it. The way they took these photographs after a person died which I think is memorable. Memories won't change and same as photographs. Photography can documented your life journey and it allows you to remember your beloved ones.
