What is Continuity? Why is it important in TV & Film Industry?

My understanding of the word 'Continuity' means repeating and doing a specific thing again and again. For this project, we are doing a continuity assessment which we need to create our final design twice in different days as to show we can create the same look. Continuity is very important in TV & Film industry because if people want to recreate other's design, they will need to follow the instructions and steps of how to create the look. Also, for example, if a makeup artist need to create the same look every single day or the actors are doing the same scene in different days, the makeup artist need to do exactly the same look, otherwise, the style of the actors will look different on the scene. So it is very important for makeup artist or stylist to create face chart, hair chart and notes to mark down the details and the steps of how to create the look.

"Each designer will have their own method for recording notes, but it is paramount to have a system. There is always a possibility of the unexpected emergency when someone take over another's work. An intelligible and well organized system will pay dividends. The details kept should contain:
  • the artist's name;
  • the name of the character portrayed;
  • the episode, if applicable;
  • the day involved, e.g. Day 1, Day 4, etc.;
  • the detailed notes of work done or clothes worn. It is important for any hair ornaments used to be recorded and kept safe;
  • any photographs taken can be stapled to these notes. " (Jan Musgrove, 2003)
For this assessment, I have done face chart, hair chart, hand design and also step by step notes with photos which helps me to recreate the look successfully and being more specific.
